We're excited to introduce Asset Auto-Tagging, a new AI-powered feature for the DAM. This feature automatically analyzes your images and generates relevant keywords, saving you valuable time and significantly improving the searchability of your assets.
How It Works
To enable the feature, go to your asset family properties. When you enable auto-tagging on an asset family, Akeneo automatically creates a new system attribute within that family. For every image asset, our AI service will analyze its content and populate this new attribute with a list of descriptive keywords.
For example, an image of a red t-shirt on a model might generate tags like: t-shirt, red, clothing, model, apparel, fashion.
Prerequisites for Activation
To activate and use the auto-tagging feature on an asset family, four conditions must be met:
- The family's
Attribute as main mediamust be a media file attribute. - This media file attribute must be configured with the
imagetype. - The attribute must not be
localizableorscopable. - You must have more available AI credits than the number of assets that need to be tagged in the family.
If one or more of these conditions are not met, you will either be unable to activate the feature, or if it's already active, the keyword generation will fail and an error will be displayed in the Process Tracker.
Understanding AI Credits
This feature consumes AI credits, which are shared across all AI-powered operations on your assets.
Where to check your balance: You can view your current credit usage and remaining balance under System > Catalog Volume Monitoring.
How credits are used: The credit system is straightforward: 1 operation performed on 1 image = 1 credit used.
The quota is shared between the following features:
- High-precision background removal
- Asset auto-tagging
Example: If you run both background removal and auto-tagging on the same image, you will use 2 credits.

Use Cases & Benefits
The automatically generated tags can be leveraged in several powerful ways:
- Enhanced Search: The keywords are fully searchable and can be used as filters in the asset grid. This allows your teams to find the exact images they need in seconds.
-
Improved SEO: You can export the tags via the API or an asset export profile. These keywords are perfect for populating image
alt-textand descriptions on your website, which can boost your SEO performance.
Limitations & Important Notes
Please keep the following limitations in mind:
- Activation is per-family: The feature is enabled in the properties of an asset family and applies to all assets within that family. It is not possible to select only specific assets within a family to tag. The process is designed to run on all of them.
- Tags are generated for the main media only and the main media must be an image.
- You can have up to 50,000 tags in a family.
- You can have up to 100 tags in an asset.
- We only accept images smaller than 50 MB in JPEG, PNG, WEBP, and GIF (non-animated) formats.
- No unified management screen: There is no central dashboard to manage all generated tags at once. Manual editing is possible: While there is no bulk management, you can still open individual assets to manually remove unwanted tags or add your own to the list.
- Tags are automatically translated for all activated locales
- When the auto-tagging feature is active, tags are only re-generated for an existing tagged media file if the asset is updated (image changes or updates to attributes). If the feature is disabled and enabled again, tags will be re-generated for any asset that has been updated since the deactivation (e.g.: update in its description attribute). If the tags were not removed and the asset has not been updated, no additional credits will be charged as no new tags are generated.
